Here, history, culture, good wine, delicious food, and the art of living well intertwine effortlessly, creating a destination that is as rich in stories as it is in charm.
If you dream of exploring Italy beyond the usual tourist paths, Bevagna, like all Umbria, is a treasure you won't want to miss.

A Journey Through Time
Walking into Bevagna is like stepping into a living painting. Stone alleys wind through the town, leading you to picturesque piazzas, ancient Roman ruins, and exquisitely preserved medieval buildings. At its heart lies Piazza Silvestri, one of the most beautiful squares in Italy, surrounded by the austere elegance of Romanesque churches and the imposing Palazzo dei Consoli. As you explore further, you’ll uncover treasures like:
- Roman Temple and Theatre: showcasing the town's rich Roman heritage.
- Museo Civico di Bevagna: a small yet captivating museum housed in the historic Palazzo Lepri.
- Artisan Craft Workshops: offering traditional paper-making, candle-making, and silk-weaving demonstrations.
- Wine Tours: just outside the town, in the heart of the Montefalco wine region, renowned for its celebrated Sagrantino grape.
Each of these experiences enriches your journey, revealing the timeless charm and authentic spirit of the town.
But that’s not all. In fact, in Bevagna history isn't a distant memory, it's part of everyday life, thanks to locals keeping traditions alive with pride. Artisans still practice traditional crafts, bakeries still produce age-old recipes, the rhythm of the seasons still shapes the town's soul, and vibrant medieval reenactment festivals like the Mercato delle Gaite help keeping a deep connection with the town’s history.
The Mercato delle Gaite: Where the Middle Ages Come Alive

Among Bevagna's many traditions, one shines particularly bright: the Mercato delle Gaite. Inspired by the town's medieval past, this historic festival transforms Bevagna into a 13th-century village each June.
But if you're visiting in the spring, don't worry: the Primavera Medievale (Medieval Spring) offers a captivating preview. Held in late April, the Primavera Medievale brings medieval life back to Bevagna with artisan workshops, taverns offering traditional fare, and lively reenactments that transport you straight into another era. It's an unforgettable experience that immerses visitors in a world of knights, merchants, and musicians.
While we'll dive deeper into the Mercato delle Gaite in a future article, know this: Bevagna's dedication to preserving its heritage is at the core of the town's magic, and the Primavera Medievale is a perfect glimpse into that world.
Embracing Slow Tourism
Bevagna embodies the spirit of slow tourism — a growing movement that celebrates mindful travel, deeper connections with local culture, and savoring every moment.
Here, there's no rush. Spend a leisurely morning exploring the Roman mosaics of the ancient baths, housed in a modest yet fascinating museum. Pause for an espresso in a sun-drenched piazza, then stroll to the medieval Teatro Torti, a jewel of 19th-century architecture.
Allow yourself to wander without a plan: you might stumble upon a tiny artisan workshop, such as the Cereria Medievale, where traditional candle-making techniques from the 13th century are still practiced , or the Tasselli Cashmere workshop, offering insights into the region's renowned textile craftsmanship.
Don’t let “tourist-trap restaurants” fool you. Look into smaller streets further away from Piazzas and touristic spots, you’ll surely find a family-run trattoria where nonna is still in the kitchen; or, perhaps, a vineyard just outside the city walls, like La Fonte di Bevagna or Cantine Briziarelli, where you can indulge in tastings of some of Umbria's finest wines.
The Art of "La Dolce Vita"
In Bevagna, "La Dolce Vita" isn't just an idea — it's a way of being. Life here follows the gentle rhythms of nature and tradition.
Long lunches stretch into the afternoon, filled with local specialties like strangozzi pasta, wild boar ragu, and Sagrantino wine. Conversations are unhurried, and friendships are genuine. The scent of wood-fired ovens fills the air, blending with the distant sound of church bells.
When visiting Bevagna, and more in general Umbria, it’s important to remember that many shops typically close after lunch, often reopening later in the afternoon, while restaurants usually close around 2:30 or 3:00 PM and reopen for dinner service around 7:00 PM. This gentle rhythm of daily life invites visitors to relax and embrace the local pace, and dive into the Italian way of living.
